A scoping review of the digital agricultural revolution and ecosystem services: implications for Canadian policy and research agendas

Abstract: The application of technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, blockchain, cellular agriculture, and big data analytics to food systems has been described as a digital agricultural revolution with the potential to increase food security and reduce agriculture’s environmental footprint. Yet, the scientific evidence informing how these technologies may impact or enhance ecosystem services has not been comprehensively reviewed. In this scoping review, we examine how digital agricultural technologies m… Show more

“…1 ) as the study area for this review. Our review follows scoping methods outlined by Arksey & O’Malley [ 15 17 ], and is based on the methods used by Green et al [ 18 ]. We followed the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist using the following steps: (1) identify research questions; (2) conduct keyword searches in electronic databases using exclusion criteria and review article reference lists; (3) perform full-text reviews of literature; (4) thematic grouping of sources; and (5) report results.…”

Thus, CAFS can play ecosystemic services that contribute to increasing the resilience of cacao plants to climate variability (Green et al, 2021). Likewise, different tree species have distinct requirements for water resources, which can be an extremely important factor in conditions in which this resource becomes scarce.…”

“…Numerous initiatives in Canada are utilising nanotechnology to enhance agricultural preservation and lower the likelihood of food loss. In order to keep fruit fresh, a nanotechnology-based smart packaging system was created, utilising hexanal-impregnated packaging and coatings generated from banana stems and other agricultural waste (Green et al, 2021).…”

“…Together, they describe the crop status, agricultural intensity, and stress, which is the perfect way to assess the stability of the food supply. Additionally, several nations are utilizing hyperspectral imaging, which is cantered on drones and satellites (Green et al, 2021). Al-Anzi (2022) went on to discuss how early warning systems and precision agriculture can help with issues related to food stability.…”
