Alors que dans la majorité des études sociologiques sur les musiciens de musiques « populaires » contemporaines, ceux-ci sont, explicitement ou implicitement, distingués selon leur genre musical (les « rockeurs », les « rappeurs », les « jazzmen », etc.), cet article se propose de mettre au jour une autre ligne de clivage entre musiciens qu’est le mode de formation. À partir de l’étude des élèves des écoles de « musiques actuelles », nous montrerons, en nous focalisant sur trois points de leur pratique, que la forme scolaire tend à développer chez les musiciens un rapport formel à la musique et à sa pratique qui les différencie fortement des musiciens formés par un apprentissage informel. Il apparait ainsi qu’élèves et autodidactes n’ont, pour ainsi dire, pas la même pratique musicale.
