A scanning probe and quartz crystal microbalance study of the impact of C60on friction at solid-liquid interfaces

Abstract: We have investigated the changes in interfacial friction of toluene on mica and Ag(111) both in the presence and in the absence of interfacial C 60 layers employing atomic force microscope (AFM) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) techniques. The lateral force measurements fail to detect C 60 at the toluene/mica interface, presumably because the C 60 is dislodged by the slowmoving probe tip. In contrast, QCM measurements of interfacial friction and slippage for toluene/Ag(111) are sensitive to the presence o… Show more

“…This makes QCM an easy to set and robust technique for bioaffinity analysis. Data obtained from QCMs are shown to be in accordance with other well-established techniques such as Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) (Cho et al, 2004; Laricchia-Robbio and Revoltella, 2004), fluorescence spectroscopy (Ha et al, 2004; Hisao, 2000), Atomic force Microscopy (Caruso et al, 1997; T. Coffey, 2001) and photoelectron microscopy (Kristensen et al, 2003).…”

“…Therefore, QCM is one of the techniques used to study the kinetics of intermolecular interactions. The reliability of QCM results has been verified by different supplementary methods such as impedance [18], electrochemical analysis [13,19], fluorescence spectroscopy [15,20], surface plasmon resonance [14,15,21], atomic force microscopy [15][16][17], and photoelectron spectroscopy [22].…”

“…The characterization of quartz resonator behavior under simultaneous mass and liquid loading has been reported in many publications [5][6][7], though a theory of the QCM operating in the liquid phase is still incompletely developed. Despite that, there is an increasing number of papers concerning QCM measurements in liquid, especially those relevant to biological applications such as immunoassays [8][9][10], biosensor techniques [11,12], monitoring the kinetics of the adsorption-desorption processes [13], monitoring DNA hybridization [14,15], and studying the problems of molecular immobilization [15][16][17].…”
