A Rotary Actuator Using Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Wires

Abstract: This paper presents the conceptual design, operating principle, simplified geometric model-based parametric analysis, experimental driving characterization, and working performance verification of a rotary actuator using shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. To achieve the research goal for developing a bidirectional SMA rotary actuator with high-torque capability, the actuator is realized with a rotational driving mechanism devised on the basis of the operating principle of wobble stepping motors. In the proposed a… Show more

“…Because of the SMA's advantage of compact size, high power/force density and corrosion-resistance, [23][24][25] the SMA ISCr trigger won't influence the electrochemical system inside battery and can output sufficient executive power once reach its A f temperature. Besides, in this research, the SMA ISCr trigger only has an area less than 1 cm 2 (7.5 mm × 7.5 mm), which is very small compared with the area of entire jelly-roll.…”

“…The SMA also has the advantage of compact size, high power/force density, corrosion-resistance, silence in action, and thus are applied in aerospace engineering, robotic engineering, biomedical engineering, etc. [23][24][25] In this research, an ISCr trigger method is proposed basing on SMA. The proposed SMA ISCr trigger method could trigger different types of ISCr and can be easily implanted into batteries.…”

“…A large amount of fibers could be served as candidate materials of fibrous artificial muscles, including artificial polymer fibers (such as nylon fibers and spandex fibers), artificial inorganic fibers (such as shape memory alloy wires and graphene fibers), and carbon nanotube fibers. Besides, composite fibers can further provide artificial muscles with more properties and functions such as the composition of paraffin or silica gel with pure fibers and composition of carbon nanotube fibers with hydrophilic polymer materials . However, these materials are subjected to high cost, difficult synthesis and processing, and potential chemical toxicity to the human body.…”

“…In traditional robots, magnetic motors are normally used to produce rotational motion. In previous works, researchers have developed motors driven by soft actuators (Kornbluh et al, 1998;Anderson et al, 2010Anderson et al, , 2011O'Brien et al, 2010;Hwang and Higuchi, 2014;Ainla et al, 2017). Ainla et al developed a motor based on a pneumatic actuator that functions by feeding air into a flexible structure (Diesel and Brock, 2013;Cacucciolo et al, 2016).…”
