A role of LINE-1 in telomere regulation

Abstract: Long interspersed nuclear elements (LINE-1) are well known as retrotransposons. A number of reports indicate that down-regulation of LINE-1 substantially affects growth of malignant cells and epithelial mesenchymal transition, which is difficult to be explained by its function as retrotransposon. More recent data indicate that LINE-1 is broadly involved in the regulation of telomere maintenance. This explains the essential role of LINE-1 for survival of malignant cells and further supports a global function of… Show more

“…Therefore, the significantly higher expression of the full-length LINE-like transcript in longlived Greenland sharks is an unexpected result. However, increased LINE-1 expression is also associated with maintenance of the telomere (Mueller et al 2018). Since telomere shortening is widely recognized as one of the hallmarks of aging (Aunan et al 2016), the active transcription of this LINE-like RNA suggests its potential to preserve genome stability and to improve telomere maintenance.…”

“…2, 3, 4), which was possibly responsible for stronger progressiveness of Lmb V23.1.3. The LINE element was the most active transposon in human genomes (Ramos et al 2021), participating in regulation of telomere structure, and leading to malignant cell proliferation (Mueller et al 2018) and tumor formation. Therefore, we speculated that the LINE elements in Lmb V23.1.3 could maintain telomere structure of genome, producing unlimited cell proliferation, and resulting in stronger pathogenicity.…”

The LINE transposons were found to be greatly active in human genomes (Ramos et al 2021), participating in regulation of telomere structure and leading to malignant cell proliferation and tumor formation (Mueller et al 2018).…”
