A Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Investigation of Innominate Osteotomy (Salter)

Abstract: The effect of the innominate osteotomy according to Salter was investigated by a roentgen stereophotogrammetric method in a 17-year-old girl with hip dysplasia as a part of the tricho-rhino-phalangeal (Giedion) syndrome. The osteotomy resulted in a total rotation of 32 degrees about an axis passing cranially to the pubic symphysis and the osteotomy. The acetabulum rotated 22 degrees forwards about a transverse axis, 9 degrees laterally about a longitudinal axis and 24 degrees laterally about a sagittal axis. T… Show more

“…On the other hand, the accuracy of the technique with total hip and knee prostheses has been studied more extensively (Hansson et al. 1978, Kärrholm 1989, Valstar et al. 2005).…”

“…The primary objective of roentgen stereophotogrammetry is to determine the threedimensional co-ordinates of structures in the body , Olsson 1975, 01sson et al 1976, Hansson et al 1978). Generally, there are no sufficiently distinct points in the body to allow a highly accurate identification in the two projections necessary for a three-dimensional reconstruction.…”

“…The radiographic examination (Selvik 1974, Hansson et al 1978) was performed 5-15 days postoperatively and was repeated during the following months (Table 1). Simultaneous exposures of the pelvis with two roentgen tubes on one film were made with the patient supine (Figure 2).…”

“…Radiostereometric measurements of one pelvic osteotomy were performed as early as 1978 (Hansson et al 1978) with the purpose of obtaining information about the position of the acetabulum preand postoperatively, but that study did not evaluate acetabular migration in the time period after surgery. RSA studies estimating migration after fractures have found slightly higher (Ragnarsson et al 1992, Ahl et al1994 or much higher Larsson 2003, 2004) migration compared to the amount of migration we found.…”
