A revisit of farm size and productivity: Empirical evidence from a wide range of farm sizes in Nigeria

Abstract: Highlights Inverse farm size-productivity relationship (IR) has been documented in Africa, but mostly among smallholders. We examine this IR over a wider range of farm sizes and among medium-scale farms (MSF) up to 40 ha in Nigeria. We find a U-shaped relationship with IR existing up to 22 ha (turning point) but productivity increases afterwards. Turning point for farmers who stepped up into MSFs is at 11 ha, in contrast to 22 ha for tho… Show more

“…Some studies used renting-in land and double cropping as instruments to estimate the farm size and productivity relationship (Lamb, 2003). However, several studies do not use an instrumental strategy despite acknowledging the presence of endogeneity (see for example, (Omotilewa et al, 2021;Garzón Delvaux et al, 2020). We too rely on the OLS results due to lack of a relevant exogenous instrument.…”

“…Asadollahpour et al, (17) stated that the achievement of economies of scale and the structure of agricultural production (agricultural size and production methods) has been the cause of agricultural production efficiency, which means that input productivity is higher than output. Jiang et al, (18) suggest that the problem in agricultural productivity is land consolidation and policy, Omotilewa et al, (19).…”

“…Consequently, smallholder farms are said to be more technically efficient in terms of labor which comes from the household to maximize production and reduce cost, while large farm sizes are labor intensive and, if not properly supervised, lead to low food production ( 13 ). In addition, the ability of smallholder farmers to mitigate environmental particularities in sub-Saharan Africa is by the adoption of local methods, using native knowledge and experience past down from generations to mitigate perceived harsh environmental conditions for farming activities ( 14 ).…”

“…In the area of production, a study opines that smallholder farms produce more than large farms ( 13 , 16 ), which is described as the inverse relationship between farm size and productivity. The influence of farm size, productivity, and crop allocation has been documented in various studies in sub-Saharan Africa.…”
