A Review on the Performance of Tribological Properties of Cutting Fluids

Abstract: Tribology deals with friction, wear and lubricants. It plays an important role in mechanical field. It finds its major application in industrial and automotive sector, in which this thesis considered the tribology in metal removal industrial sector. In that application, the role of cutting fluid in lathe machining operations have been chosen. One of the most important challenging cases is to minimize the friction in machining of titanium alloys. While machining, the heat should be minimized as low as possible.… Show more

“…A traditional oil-based cutting fluid is widely used due to its lubricating effect and non-volatile properties. However, there are some concerns regarding the practical application of this technology, such as poor cooling performance and serious environmental pollution [9]. On the other hand, water-based lubricants possess excellent cooling properties and, due to their low lubricating oil content, reduce environmental impact while still being able to form hydrodynamic lubrication films during friction [2].…”

“…The high interest in cutting fluids can be confirmed by the significant number of review articles on this topic [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Most of them deal with the development, optimisation, and selection of cutting fluids for different cutting operations, and not with an appropriate method to test them.…”

“…However, the green environmental protection cutting fluid paid more attention by the improvement of people's awareness of environmental protection. According to research reports, biodegradable vegetable oil as the base oil of cutting fluid was used instead of mineral oil [8][9][10]. In addition, the use of green additives in water-based cutting fluid had gradually become the research direction of researchers.…”
