A review on the engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics of diesel engines fueled with biodiesel blends

Abstract: Biodiesels have gained much popularity because they are cleaner alternative fuels and they can be used directly in diesel engines without modifications. In this paper, a brief review of the key studies pertaining to the engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics of diesel engines fueled with biodiesel blends, exhaust aftertreatment systems, and low-temperature combustion technology is presented. In general, most biodiesel blends result in a significant decrease in carbon monoxide and total unburne… Show more

“…The multi-gaussian DAEM was successfully applied to the 3 or 4 pseudocomponents for the biomass samples in order to obtain the parallel descriptions of each independent pyrolysis reaction. (4). The reaction rate of char oxidation was taken into account by using the Kissinger equation, and it shows appropriate linearity for the derived kinetic parameters.…”

“…As such, KOEN carried out the replacement of the old facility and the fuel conversion process so as to increase the installed life and be responsive to the RPS system while preparing a response framework for CO 2 emission rights, thereby setting an example for the fuel conversion of coal-fired power plants in Korea. Nonetheless, biomass-fired boilers, including the system at YD #1, inevitably have experienced problems caused by the characteristics of biomass, the most common ones being the low calorific values due to the high inherent moisture of biomass and the low pulverization potential; moreover, considerable difficulty is associated with predicting the combustibility of biomass because of its unique characteristics that differ from carbonaceous solid fuels, exhibiting a high degree of carbonization [3,4].…”

“…During the techno-economic simulation, bioethanol fuel application was analyzed and compared with diesel since diesel is the dominant fuel in a diesel generator. Bioethanol is recommended in this study to be initially blended with diesel [48][49][50]. Table 7 depicts the techno-economic parameters for simulation of diesel generator by Homer software.…”

“…It can be used in pure form or mixed in any proportion with diesel, forming a diesel-biodiesel binary mixture. 1,2 Usually, diesel-biodiesel blends with low volume percent biodiesel are used in diesel engines. In some countries, such as the United States, Australia and Indonesia, this percentage reaches 20% (B20).…”
