A review on properties of abrasive grits and grit selection

Abstract: Abstract:Although abrasive machining is among the oldest manufacturing principles, it is still essential for today's industry. Abrasive tool quality is significantly affected by the quality of the contained abrasive grits. This paper gives an overview on the most important grit properties for grinding tools with regard to tool performance and manufacture. These properties include grit size, shape, and toughness. Relevant techniques for grit sorting and analysis (sieving, sedimentation, shape sorting, friabilit… Show more

“…(Kiyak and Çakır, 2007) found that different abrasive grain sizes (given as mesh numbers) and grain size distributions change surface roughness and affect functionality. (Linke, 2015) has discussed the importance of proper selection and implementation of abrasive tools for machining. has shown how the abrasive grit numbers and process parameters are used to achieve the desired surface quality and can be used for process optimization.…”

“…The chip formation mechanism is inferred from a large amount of experimental and simulation data analyses. Because of stochastic nature of wheel topography, the grit distribution and material characteristics under specific test conditions cannot be controlled and monitored easily, the dynamic grinding performance and its control mechanism are typically judged qualitatively [11,12,13].…”
