A review on power quality issues in electric vehicle interfaced distribution system and mitigation techniques

Abstract: Electric vehicles (EV) penetration in the distribution systems is evident and intended to grow day by day. Power quality issues pop up in the distribution system with an increase in EV penetration. Distribution networks need to consider the power quality issues developed due to the penetration of EVs for planning and designing the system. The power quality issues, including voltage imbalance, total harmonic distortion, distribution transformer failure, and related issues, are anticipated due to EV penetration … Show more

“…Electric vehicle is the present trend attracting researchers for integrating to MG, nano grid (NG) for two-way power flow through energy storage system (ESS), the power quality problems associate to grid are discussed with optimal solution by connecting filter and restorer [6]. A review paper discusses the power quality issues in bidirectional power flow in electric vehicle to grid [7]. To reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) in a single-phase inverter a control technique confined band variable switching frequency pulse width modulation (CB-VSFPWM) is designed [8].…”

“…The abundant usage of rectifiers in the third rail systems can cause severe harmonic distortion [7]- [9]. Harmonic distortions give rise to many technical issues including degradation of transformers [10], [11] and electric motors [12], low power factor, malfunction of protective relays, increase of power losses, resonance [13], [14], and interference to communication devices [15]. For example, the use of 12-pulse rectifiers in the third rail system has generated a significant amount of 11 th and 13 th order harmonics, resulting in significant harmonic pollution to the rail system [16].…”
