A review on lithium-ion battery ageing mechanisms and estimations for automotive applications

Abstract: Lithium-ion batteries have become the focus of research interest, thanks to their numerous benets for vehicle applications. One main limitation of these technologies resides in the battery ageing. The eects of battery ageing limit its performance and occur throughout its whole life, even if the battery is used or not, which is a major drawback on real usage. Furthermore, degradations take place in every condition, but in dierent proportions as usage and external conditions interact to provoke degradations. The… Show more

“…On the one hand, high cell temperature, even locally, can have a detrimental influence on the cell performance. For instance, cycle life of the cell can be heavily influenced leading to accelerated ageing of the cell [4,5]. On the other hand, excessive and uncontrolled heat can lead to thermal runway and ultimately may lead to explosion of the cell [6].…”

“…Since capacity degradation of Li-ion batteries is mainly affected by operational temperature, charge-discharge rate, DOD, among other factors [33,34], within normal charging current and temperature ranges, the constant current profiles are desirable for reducing battery aging effects [35]. In addition, the intermittent charging process is beneficial to the completion of the Li-ion diffusion reaction and can reduce the possibility of Li-ion deposits at the anode [36,37].…”

“…This is mainly due to the manufacturing process, but also to different ageing process evolution (calendar and cycle ageing) and environmental conditions that can affect the evolution of cell parameters during normal operation [6,7]. This situation means that the overall voltage may not be uniformly distributed over the different cells of the string (in the case of serial connections), as is desirable.…”
