A review on h-index and its alternative indices

Abstract: In recent years, several scientometrics and bibliometrics indicators were proposed to evaluate the scientific impact of individuals, institutions, colleges, universities and research teams. The h-index gives a breakthrough in the research community for assessing the scientific impact of an individual. It got a lot of attention due to its simplicity, and several other indicators were proposed to extend the properties of the h-index and to overcome its shortcomings. In this literature review, we have discussed t… Show more

According to the definition of the H-index(Bihari et al 2021), 153 documents were cited for 153 times or more, and 3209 documents were cited for less than 153 times. Within Web of Science database, the documents were cited by 56,394 publications (16.77 citing publications per document).…”

“…For instance, although Scopus automatically compiles data on authors including publications, citation counts, and metrics such as the H-index, unless an author profile is “claimed” and continually updated, the numbers tallied are likely underestimations of total scientific output. The H-index itself has many advantages including its easy computability, lack of required data processing, and accessibility from most indexing databases, but it is certainly not a perfect measure of scientific productivity 19 . We did not collect data on project mentors which may also significantly affect the outcomes assessed in this study and would be interesting to investigate further 4 .…”

“…The h-index roughly measures the number of impactful publications a researcher has produced. While there are several similar indices that address various inconsistencies in the h-index (Bihari, Tripathi, and Deepak 2021;Waltman and Van Eck 2012), and alternatives such as the proposed "Success Index" (Franceschini et al 2012), none of them address the impact of dataset sharing in scientific research. We believe the SCIENCE-index, proposed in our prior work would serve as a powerful incentive mechanism for our data sharing protocol.…”
