“…In order to analyze and prevent catastrophic accident, some methods for calculating and analyzing torsional vibration of turbo-generator shafts were presented [5][6][7]. To alleviate or suppress torsional vibrations of large turbo-generator set shafts, many countermeasures have been proposed such as power system stabilizer (PSS) [8], voltage source converter (VSC) [9], static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) [10][11][12], single-pole switching technique [13], braking resistor [14], superconductive energy storage system [15], the nonlinear ZnO over-voltage protection of series capacitors [16], and high temperature super-conductive fault current limiter [17] etc. Most of them are based on the modulation of the effective and reactive powers to bring supplementary damping into the system.…”

“…[2,3] proposed a by‐pass damped filter, which is parallel to the compensation capacitor to suppress the sub‐synchronous oscillation of the system by suppressing the sub‐synchronous current. Other counter‐ measures also have been proposed to alleviate the torsional vibration, such as various voltage source converters based FACTS [4], power system stabilizer (PSS) [5], the nonlinear ZnO over‐voltage protection of series capacitors [6] and superconductive energy storage system [7] etc. It can be seen from the above that most of them are based on the modulation of the effective and reactive powers to bring supplementary damping into the system, little consideration is given to solving the shafting stability problem from the structure of the turbo‐generator itself.…”

“…FACTS devices are often employed to enhance power system stability and power quality improvement. There are various types of FACTS devices, each with its attendant features, merits, and demerits [ 19 ]. A FACTS device can be used either individually or in coordination with another FACTS device type in order to provide control of transmission system parameters of interest, which are essential to the successful operation of the grid.…”
