A review on airport gate assignment problems: Single versus multi objective approaches

Abstract: Assigning aircraft to gates is an important decision problem that airport professionals face every day. The solution of this problem has raised a significant research effort and many variants of this problem have been studied. In this paper, we review past work with a focus on identifying types of formulations, classifying objectives, and categorising solution methods. The review indicates that there is no standard formulation, that passenger oriented objectives are most common, and that more recent work are m… Show more

“…us, the need for increasing plan robustness has been constantly rising. Also, according to Daş et al [27], the growing number of articles only considering robustness-related objectives demonstrate the significance of this type of objective. erefore, we still list robustness as an independent perspective.…”

“…Constraint 3indicates that any flight assigning to a gate must be assigned to an event of the gate. Constraint (4) indicates that each event can be assigned with at most one flight. Constraint (5) avoids flight assignments with conflict arrival and departure time.…”

“…A comprehensive survey of the developments of the gate assignment problems was provided by Dorndorf et al [2], and Bouras et al [3] gave an updated review for the research progress of the problem and the various solution methods. Recently, Daş et al [4] reviewed the formulation, objectives, and also solution approaches for variants of the gate assignment problem. e main existing work for the GAP is summarized as follows.…”

“…Airport gate assignment is a complex problem involving many variables and parameters. A detailed review article has been published on the AGAP (Daş et al , 2020). In this paper, the AGAP is basically divided into three objectives: passenger-based, robustness-based and airport/airline-based.…”
