A Review of Using IoT for Energy Efficient Buildings and Cities: A Built Environment Perspective

Abstract: Applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) are rapidly utilized in smart buildings and smart cities to reduce energy consumption. This advancement has caused a knowledge gap in applying IoT effectively by experts in the built environment to achieve energy efficiency. The study aims to provide an extensive review of IoT applications for energy savings in buildings and cities. This study contributes to the field of IoT by guiding and supporting built environment experts to utilize IoT technologies. This paper … Show more

“…Another promising digital technology with promising impacts on facilitating the transition of construction industry towards a CE is the adoption of IoT technology (AL-Obaidi et al, 2022;Wang et al, 2021). IoT sensors can be employed to monitor waste generation, identify areas where waste is being generated excessively and track waste throughout the construction process (Rejeb et al, 2022b).…”

“…This information can then be used to improve waste management practices and reduce waste. Additionally, IoT-enabled devices can be used to track the location and condition of materials, allowing for efficient and effective reuse and recycling of materials (Rejeb et al, 2022b;AL-Obaidi et al, 2022). For example, IoT sensors can be used to track the quality and location of recycled materials, ensuring that they are used appropriately and not wasted (Wang et al, 2021).…”

“…First, we review used approaches to model building modelling. Modelling and simulation in building design began in 1985 with, "Modelling and Simulation in Building Design" [6], where author combined useful information using different approaches and methods in building simulation. Carbb et al [7] analysed the thermal behaviour of buildings by using a simplified dynamic thermal network consisted of resistances (R) and capacitances (C).…”

“…ICT technologies and BEMS are integrated in a so-called Smart Building environment which helps to reduce building power consumption through the processes: 1-Delivery Optimization, 2-Demand Optimization, and 3-Asset Optimization [4]. Not only BEMS systems are integrated in buildings, but also emerging technologies in the context of Industry 4.0 like IOT devices are integrated to measure and store data regarding energy consumption [6]. On the other hand, there exist a considerable number of buildings that we do not have past measurements or ICT systems are not installed.…”

“…Smart grid systems are expanding and developing due to the integration of IoT networks. Moreover, wireless technologies facilitate the grid environment obtaining environmental behaviors and conditions [ 27 , 28 , 29 ]. Such technologies manage the information collection and flow of data toward cloud systems with the support of edge computing.…”
