A Review of Transparent Insulation Material (TIM) for building energy saving and daylight comfort

Abstract: Improving the energy efficiency of building is key strategy in responding to climate change and resource challenges associated with the use of fossil fuel derived energy. The characteristics of the building envelope play a decisive role in determining building operation energy. Transparent Insulation Materials (TIMs) add to the strategies that may be used to sustain these improvements: they can reduce heat loss by providing high thermal resistance while effectively transmitting solar energy and contributing to… Show more

“…These parameters, that affect a building's thermal and visual comfort level and its energy demands, are controlled by designers (Oral & Yilmaz, 2002). Window system design and effective parameters: Windows are one of the most influential building's elements regarding a building's LCEP (Huang et al 2014;Cuce and Riffat 2015;Amaral et al 2016;Sun 2017;Sun et al 2018). Window's orientation, dimensions and shading affect the optimisation energy consumption and thermal comfort.…”

“…Windows are another part of a building envelope that has a significant impact on energy performance. Thus, newer technologies in transparent material has been developed and implemented in building envelopes, such as vacuum glazing [16], evacuated glazing [17], and transparent insulation [18]. These new technologies not only reduce the heat gain but also provide the desired visible daylight to a building.…”

“…The reduction of excessive solar gains can also be achieved by using appropriate selective absorbers [15][16][17] and thermotropic layers integrated with transparent insulation, which reversibly reduce the total solar energy transmittance, becoming opaque after heating [10]. Works [3,[18][19][20] provide an overview of insulation systems based on transparent materials, as well as the materials which transparent insulations are made of.…”

“…Compared to studies of a scaled model, such simulations are more cost-effective, both in terms of time and finance, as changes in TI parameters can be easily incorporated into a computer program and thus provide guidance on how to optimize future applications [3]. At present, many building simulation tools, such as EnergyPlus, ESP-r, and TRNSYS, have been adapted to calculate the energy efficiency of buildings using transparent insulation [3,19].…”
