A review of the use of latanoprost for glaucoma since its launch

Abstract: Latanoprost was the first prostaglandin analog introduced in glaucoma management and it dramatically changed the market of the disease thanks to its efficacy and safety. Conjunctival hyperemia, which is commonly found after latanoprost use, is associated with a minor efficacy and duration of trabeculectomy; yet, from the ophthalmologist's perspective, this side effect seems largely counterbalanced by the high efficacy and safety of this compound. It is always advisable to consider the pro-inflammatory mode of … Show more

“…Normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) is the most common type of glaucoma in Japan,3 with a prevalence rate of 3.6% in people over 40 years of age. The ophthalmic solutions 0.005% latanoprost (Lat)4,5 and 0.0015% tafluprost (Taf)6,7 are topical prostaglandin analogs. Both solutions greatly reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) by increasing the uveoscleral outflow as a prostaglandin F receptor agonist 8.…”

“…The most common form of glaucoma is primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), and it has the highest prevalence in Africa where it affects 4.20% of the population between 40–80 years of age [1]. Current glaucoma treatments aim to halt glaucoma progression by lowering intraocular pressure (IOP), the buildup of aqueous flow resistance which contributes to RGC damage, but are unable to reverse damage [4,5]. In many cases, despite interventions, glaucomatous damage worsens with time, as ~ 27% of patients with open angle glaucoma may still face blindness in one eye, and 7% in both eyes after years of treatment [6].…”

“…They are known to be highly effective and have little systemic side effects. Latanoprost is an ester prodrug analog of prostaglandin F2α which reduces the intraocular pressure by increasing the uveoscleral outflow2. Latanoprost 0.005% has received the European and the US approval as the first-line drug reducing the intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.…”

“…The elevated intraocular pressure is the most important risk factor of glaucoma progression1. According to the World Health Organization and the Glaucoma Foundation, glaucoma is believed to affect between 67 to 105 million people worldwide2. The maintenance therapy with topical anti-glaucoma drug is crucial to prevent a permanent visual loss.…”
