A Review of Simulation Methods of Laser Matter Interactions Focused on Nanosecond Laser Pulsed Systems

Abstract: A review study of the developments in the field of pulsed laser-solid interaction simulation methods, for moderate laser energies, is presented. The paper is focused on the methods that numerically simulate the interactions of pulsed ns-laser with solid metal targets. Three main regimes for pulsed laser excitation, are well established, namely, the thermoelastic, melting and plasma regimes. The modelling and simulation techniques that may numerically describe these three regimes and the occurring dynamic matte… Show more

“…The root γ 1 as well as the real part of the γ 2 and γ 3 are positive and all represent growing perturbations, while the magnitude of the real root γ 1 is larger than the real part of roots γ 2 and γ 3 . To compute the instability instantaneous growth rate, the temperature dependent thermal properties such as c v and κ as well as the temperature dependent mechanical properties such as λ, µ and α T were taken from the literature [4,47,48], while values for ρ, σ xz , σ yz , σ zz , ∂η/∂T, ∂T/∂t and ∂η/∂ρ were taken from our FEM-BEM simulation results and the values for j from the experimental current density, while σ sum is the total stress in z direction i.e. σ sum = σ xz + σ yz + σ zz .…”

“…The FEM is a series of computerized numerical calculations based on matrices. It is versatile due to its flexibility in modeling complicated geometries when the domain changes, when the desired precision varies over the entire domain or when the solution lacks smoothness [19,20]. During FEM preprocessing, the structure is subdivided into a mesh (or grid) that, depending on the geometry, may consist of onedimensional line elements; two-dimensional area elements, such as triangles or rectangles; or three-dimensional volume elements, such as regular or irregular tetrahedra or hexahedra or other polyhedra.…”

“…Lasers are widely used as a valuable tool for laser material processing [1,2] in highprecision cutting and drilling manufacturing operations [3], as well as in laser-assisted machining [4,5]. Laser-solid interaction constitutes a process of major scientific and technological interest, where complex physical phenomena occur.…”
