A review of penile metastasis

Abstract: Penile cancer as primary disease is relatively rare in developed countries. The penis is a rare site of metastases in spite of its rich vascularization. Approximately 500 cases have been reported in the literature; almost 70% of primary lesions are of pelvic origin (from genitourinary or recto-sigmoid primary tumors). We describe a case of penile metastasis from lung cancer. The rarity of the event prompted us to also explore related reviews and discuss the incidence, physiopathology, diagnosis and therapy of … Show more

“…Since almost all penile primary cancers start in the skin cells of the penis, early diagnosis of primary cancers is usually not a challenging entity for clinicians. However, secondary penile cancer is usually a deep disease that does not develop as a superficial skin lesion and usually early diagnosis is more difficult [5]. Penile fracture on the other hand is a urological emergency caused by blunt trauma to the penis during erection.…”

“…Secondary penile cancer, as a result of systemic metastasis is a rare condition and is usually secondary to malignancies of the pelvic region [5]. Bladder and prostate are the most common primary organs of penile metastasis [5]. Since almost all penile primary cancers start in the skin cells of the penis, early diagnosis of primary cancers is usually not a challenging entity for clinicians.…”

“…Penile nodules involve both corpora cavernosa in about 70% of patients which explains the increased frequency of priapism. Corpus spongiosum and the glans penis are less frequently involved (1). Penile metastasis is associated with advanced disease and, therefore, has a poor prognosis with a short life expectancy (5).…”
