A review of patterns in collaborative work

Abstract: Patterns, repeatable processes for recurring high-value tasks, have great potential for assisting computer-mediated collaboration. In this paper we focus on patterns for collaborative work as a means to capture best practices about recurring collaborative problems and solutions amongst dispersed groups. We present a comparative review of relevant research and commercial efforts related to patterns that can be used to facilitate collaboration.

“…According to the classification proposed by Verginadis et al [36], the project communication management patterns, specified in the subsequent section, could be considered as a specific kind of patterns in collaborative work, and precisely classified as "an approach that aims to directly assist participants", and "which requires manual intervention". For specifying q-effect the following communication quality aspects were considered: clearness and cohesion, adequate level of detail, right time, meeting needs of communicating participants, engaging right people, guarantee of uniform understanding of the content, communication workflow supporting openness, redundancy and feedback.…”

“…A collaborative activity is defined as a coordinated and synchronous task whose goal is to build and maintain a shared design of a problem (Roschell et al, 1994). Collaboration has been largely studied in the literature as shows the review provided by (Verginadis et al, 2010). In (Potrock et al, 2009), the authors propose a classification of collaboration approaches based on prescriptive and descriptive formalisms.…”

“…Some research works can be found in the literature about collaboration patterns (Verginadis et al, 2010;Herrmann T., et al 2003;Erickson, 2000), but very limited work has been done about their automatic application during software development.…”
