A review of methods for addressing components of interventions in meta-analysis

Abstract: Many healthcare interventions are complex, consisting of multiple, possibly interacting, components. Several methodological articles addressing complex interventions in the meta-analytical context have been published. We hereby provide an overview of methods used to evaluate the effects of complex interventions with meta-analytical models. We summarized the methodology, highlighted new developments, and described the benefits, drawbacks, and potential challenges of each identified method. We expect meta-analyt… Show more

“…Then, they should aim to evaluate the intervention and implement it, if found effective. In addition, our review, showing that there are some narrative differences between effective and ineffective interventions, paved the way for future research and the next potential step can be to do a meta-analysis, using the methods developed for evaluating effects of individual components in complex interventions ( 81 ), to predict what intervention variables are associated with reductions in blood pressure.…”

“…Subgroup analyses were run when specific subgroups (such as theoretical orientation of psychological interventions, type of delivery agents, dosage density of intervention and type of population) were reported in more than 4 studies. We used meta-regression analysis [ 31 ] to understand the impact of other therapeutic elements of interventions employed in included studies compared with ‘relaxation techniques’. Meta-regression analysis was run when covariates were reported in more than ten studies [ 32 , 33 ].…”
