This study analyzed the chemical composition and anesthetic potential of essential oil (EO) of Nectandra megapotamica in fat snook (Centropomus parallelus). For the extraction of EO by hydrodistillation, leaves were separated in young (EO-Y) or old (EO-O), and the chemical composition of the EOs was determined by CG-MS. The anesthetic potential was assessed by the evaluation of induction and recovery time of anesthesia and stress response from anesthesia and transport. Three experiments were carried out: i) four different concentrations of each EO were tested to evaluate anesthesia induction and recovery time; ii) two concentrations of EO-O were tested for the evaluation of its effects on stress parameters (glucose, lactate, and Na + and K + plasma levels) caused by anesthesia; and iii) fish were transported in plastic bags, supplied with two concentrations of EO-O for the evaluation of water quality and mortality. All experiments were performed on fish acclimated to 0 and 33 ppt salinity. The main constituents of the Y and O-EOs were bicyclogermacrene (46.5/34.6%), α-pinene (26.8/26.2%), β-pinene (7.9/12.3%), and germacrene D (9.6/9.1%). Mild sedation was achieved at 30 µL L -1 (1.3-3.2 min) and deep anesthesia at 150 µL L -1 (5.6-8.0 min) with both EOs. The recovery time ranged from 1-10 min. The EO-O was not able to avoid the stress of anesthesia evidenced by elevated glucose and lactate plasma levels observed in all groups. Plasma levels of Na + and K + were not significantly affected by treatments. During transport, the use of EO-O did not prevent deterioration in water quality and the post-transport mortality. In conclusion, the EO of N. megapotamica has anesthetic activity in fat snook, but it was not able to prevent the stress of anesthesia and transport.Este estudo analisou a composição química e o potencial anestésico do óleo essencial (OE) de Nectandra megapotamica em robalos-peva (Centropomus parallelus). Para a extração do OE por hidrodestilação, as folhas foram separadas em jovens (OE-J) ou velhas (OE-V) e a composição química foi determinada por CG-EM. O potencial anestésico foi acessado através da avaliação do tempo de indução e recuperação da anestesia e resposta ao estresse do procedimento anestésico e transporte. Foram realizados três experimentos: em primeiro lugar, quatro concentrações diferentes de cada OE foram testadas para avaliar o tempo de indução à anestesia e de recuperação; em segundo lugar, duas concentrações do OE-V foram testadas para avaliar os efeitos sobre os parâmetros de estresse (níveis plasmáticos de glicose, lactato, Na + e K + ) causados pelo procedimento anestésico; em terceiro lugar, os peixes foram transportados em sacos plásticos com duas concentrações do OE-V para avaliação da qualidade da água e mortalidade. ORIGINAL Effect of three diets in the experimental culture of the common snook (Centropomus undecimalisBloch RESUMENObjetivo. Evaluar el efecto de tres dietas sobre el desempeño de juveniles de róbalo (Centropomus undecimalis) mantenidos en estanques de agua dulce. Materiales y métodos. 108 juveniles de róbalo fueron distribuidos homogénea y aleatoriamente en un estanque dividido en 9 corrales de 50 m 2 . Se suministraron tres dietas (D1: alimento comercial para truchas, 45% de proteína; D2: alimento comercial para cobia, 50% de proteína y D3: pescado fresco, 17.52% de proteína). Los tratamientos experimentales fueron asignados por triplicado y se les suministró cada dieta en dos dosis diarias. Se realizaron biometrías cada 20 días evaluando: peso, talla, relación Longitud-Peso, Factor de Conversión Alimenticia (FCA), Factor de Condición (K), Tasa Específica de Crecimiento (SGR) y supervivencia final; durante 120 días. Los resultados fueron evaluados con un ANOVA a una vía, cuando no se encontraron diferencias (p>0.05) las medias fueron comparadas mediante la prueba de la Mediana de Mood. En caso de significación estadística del ANOVA, se aplicó la prueba de comparación múltiple de Tukey HSD. Resultados. Se encontraron diferencias estadísticas entre los tratamientos, mostrando los mayores crecimientos y rendimientos con D2, con valores de SGR=0.65±0.09 g/día; FCA=3.76 y K=0.81±0.06. La supervivencia fue D1=51.4%, D2=50% y D3=77.8% sin diferir estadísticamente entre las diferentes dietas. Conclusiones. El cultivo de esta especie en estanques de agua dulce con suministro de alimento comercial para cobia es viable en términos de crecimiento y ganancia en peso.Palabras claves: acuicultura, alimentación, bioensayos, índice de crecimiento (Fuente: Tesauro ambiental para Colombia) ABStRACtObjective. Karyotypic characterization in mitosis and meiosis of the common snook Centropomus undecimalis (Pisces: Centropomidae). The common snook Centropomus undecimalis inhabits marine, brackish and freshwater habitats in the Western Central Atlantic Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico. Common snook is an economically important fish in many localities, nevertheless the number of studies on its biology and genetics are still few. The present study attempts to establish the cytogenetic profiles of the specimens collected in Paraiso Municipality Tabasco, Mexico. Tissue of five females and eight male organisms were processed by conventional cytological techniques to obtain chromosome slides of high quality in order to assemble the karyotype. The results from the kidney tissue analysis showed that 85.1% of 288 mitosis had a 2n=48 chromosomes, and 52.8% of 104 meiosis exhibited the haploid number 1n=24. The diploid karyotype showed 48 monoarmed chromosomes of the telocentric (T) type. There was no chromosome heteromorphism between females and males. The diploid karyotype was very similar to that observed in the majority of marine fishes. Rev. Biol. Trop. 59 (2): 683-692. Epub 2011 June 01.
