A Review of Hyperthermia Combined With Radiotherapy/Chemotherapy on Malignant Tumors

Abstract: Therapeutic hyperthermia is a procedure that involves heating tissues to a higher temperature level, typically ranging from 41 degrees C to 45 degrees C. Its combination with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy has been performed for many years, with remarkable success in treating advanced and recurrent cancers. The current hyperthermia strategies generally include local, regional, and whole-body hyperthermia, which can be implemented by many heating methods, such as microwave, radiofrequency, laser, and ultrasou… Show more

“…[5][6][7] Cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (cDDP, cisplatin) is a well characterized chemotherapeutic agent that has shown promising results when combined with hyperthermia, but its mechanisms of potentiation remain largely unknown. 8,9 Uptake of cDDP by the cell appears to be mediated by two distinct mechanisms, ie, active transport via copper transporter receptors and passive diffusion through the cellular membrane. 10 Currently, it is believed that active transport is the dominant mechanism of cDDP uptake.…”

“…10,41 However, this might be countered by increasing the SLP of the particles, reducing the frequency, application to smaller diameters such as head or extremities, and lower target temperatures. Hyperthermia has long been known to be synergistic with chemotherapy and radiotherapy 78,[92][93][94] and requires much lower temperatures (∼40°C-43°C).…”
