Deicing of pavements is essential to ensure safe and timely movement of traffic in geographical locations where snow and ice events are anticipated. State and local municipalities employ brine solution with 23.3 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) available in the form of rock salt to deice the pavements. Unlike water, the brine solution does not freeze until the temperature falls below −21.0 °C, i.e., the freezing point of water is depressed by −21.0 °C with the addition of 23.3 wt% NaCl. The depressed freezing point of the brine solution plays a key role in deicing pavements. Unfortunately, a further increase in rock salt content does not lower the freezing point of the brine solution. In this study, different combinations of agricultural products such as polyols including sorbitol, maltitol, and mannitol in brine (23.3 wt% of NaCl in water), and NaCl-juice (corn and beet juice) were investigated to achieve freezing point depressions below −21.0 °C for potential deicing applications in extremely cold areas. Different weight fractions of polyols-brine solutions ranging from 7.14% to 27.77% were considered, and corresponding freezing points were determined. While the sorbitol-brine solution exhibited the lowest freezing point of −38.1 °C at a higher concentration, the maltitol-brine solution exhibited a freezing point of −35.6 °C at the same concentration. Based on the °Brix value, beet juice had almost three times more soluble solids and a lower freezing point compared to corn juice. Adding 23.3 wt% of NaCl in 70% corn juice lowered the freezing point up to −23.5 °C.

Shallow water table (SWT) is an acute problem in cultivating vegetables at riparian wetland during transitional period from dry to rainy season. SWT limits volume of aerobic rhizosphere and reduces oxygen availability. Meanwhile, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has been known for its effectiveness in offsetting negative effects of abiotic stresses. The aim of this study was to evaluate effectiveness of ALA application at pre-or during continuous 20-day SWT exposure in snap bean. SWT exposures were set at depth of 5 cm (SWT-5), 10 cm (SWT-10) and 15 cm (SWT-15) below substrate surface. ALA was applied at 4 days before SWT initiation (14 DAP), mid of SWT exposure period (28 DAP), or at end of SWT exposure (38 DAP). Results of this study indicated that SWT exposure affected growth of shoots and roots, leaf water status, proline content, and SPAD value in snap bean plant. Shallowest water table (SWT-5) caused the most severe effects. Effectiveness of ALA application was depended on time difference between ALA application and onset of SWT exposure. ALA application did not significantly improve recovery of snap bean plants after SWT exposure was terminated.

Foliar Spray of Stigmasterol Regulates Physiological Processes and Antioxidant Mechanisms to Improve Yield and Quality of Sunflower Under Drought Stress

Drought stress is an unavoidable challenge limiting plant production and quality. Stigmasterol is a potential compound for plant protection and improvement productivity under drought. Thus, the effects of using stigmasterol as exogenous treatment on improving growth and productivity of sunflower grown under drought were studied. A pot experiment was carried out at two summer seasons, using foliar treatment of stigmasterol 0, 100, 200, and 300 mg L−1 on sunflower plants under different irrigation levels 80% and 50% water irrigation requirement (WIR). Drought stress (50% WIR) provoked significant reductions in growth and yield components; the percentages of decrease in head diameter reached 26.55%, head circumference 26.05%, seed weight per plant 36.26%, and 100 seed weight 29.61%, via decreasing photosynthetic pigments and indole acetic acid while elevating hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation (MDA), membrane leakage, lipoxygenase activity, some antioxidant compounds, enzymes, and osmolytes. Stigmasterol has a promotive effect on growth and productivity of sunflower through improving photosynthetic pigments, indole acetic acid, non-enzymatic, enzymatic antioxidant, and osmolytes, while it decreased membrane leakage, H2O2, and MDA, thus, improving yield quality. Moreover, stigmasterol improves the economic importance of sunflower seed oil. About 200 mg L−1 of stigmasterol was the most effective concentration in improving yield parameters, as it causes 19.84% and 25.29% in seed weight per plant and 26.72% and 33.95% of 100 seed weight under 80% and 50% WIR, respectively. Stigmasterol improved growth and productivity of sunflower under normal water conditions and could overcome the reduced impact of drought by improving growth and development and different physiological attributes.
