Wearable Vibrotactile Haptic Device for Stiffness Discrimination during Virtual Interactions

In this paper, we discuss the development of cost effective, wireless, and wearable vibrotactile haptic device for stiffness perception during an interaction with virtual objects. Our experimental setup consists of haptic device with five vibrotactile actuators, virtual reality environment tailored in Unity 3D integrating the Oculus Rift Head Mounted Display (HMD) and the Leap Motion controller. The virtual environment is able to capture touch inputs from users. Interaction forces are then rendered at 500 Hz and fed back to the wearable setup stimulating fingertips with ERM vibrotactile actuators. Amplitude and frequency of vibrations are modulated proportionally to the interaction force to simulate the stiffness of a virtual object. A quantitative and qualitative study is done to compare the discrimination of stiffness on virtual linear spring in three sensory modalities: visual only feedback, tactile only feedback, and their combination. A common psychophysics method called the Two Alternative Forced Choice (2AFC) approach is used for quantitative analysis using Just Noticeable Difference (JND) and Weber Fractions (WF). According to the psychometric experiment result, average Weber fraction values of 0.39 for visual only feedback was improved to 0.25 by adding the tactile feedback.

Integracja człowieka z egzoszkieletem -tak, aby poprawnie odzwierciedlał on zamiary użytkownika w zakresie ruchu kończyny górnej -wymaga zastosowania odpowiedniej metody sterowania, zawierającej algorytm wykrywania intencji. W artykule przedstawiono założenia dotyczące budowy egzoszkieletu kończyny górnej, a także proponowaną procedurę badawczą oraz wstępnie opracowane metody sterowania manipulatora wspomagającego, bazujące na analizie charakterystyki sygnału elektromiograficznego (EMG) oraz zastosowaniu sieci neuronowych. SŁOWA KLUCZOWE: egzoszkielet, metoda sterowania, EMG Human integration with the exoskeleton, so that it correctly reflects the intentions of the user, requires the use of an appropriate control method containing an intent detection algorithm. The article presents the assumptions concerning the construction of the upper limb exoskeleton, the preliminary research procedure and the pre-developed methods of controlling the assistance manipulator based on the analysis of the electromyographic signal (EMG) characteristics and the use of neural networks. KEYWORDS: exoskeleton, control method, EMGWe współczesnym świecie bardzo ciężka praca fizyczna została niemal całkowicie wyeliminowana dzięki mechanizacji i automatyzacji wielu dziedzin życia. Istnieją jednak sytuacje, gdy człowiek jest niezastąpiony, jednak siła jego mięśni okazuje się niewystarczająca do realizacji powierzonych mu zadań. Dotyczy to sytuacji awaryjnych, np. wypadków czy katastrof, gdy od ratowników wymaga się użycia sporej siły (potrzebnej np. do przenoszenia rannych), a także takich przypadków, jak pielęgnacja chorych. Szczególną grupę stanowią osoby z niepełnospraw-nością, o ograniczonej sile mięśni. W ich przypadku praca zawodowa, a nawet proste czynności życia codziennego są znacznie utrudnione.We wszystkich tych sytuacjach do wspomagania czło-wieka można wykorzystać egzoszkielet, czyli system mechatroniczny mocowany na zewnątrz ciała człowieka, który ma na celu wzmocnienie siły jego mięśni [1]. Wspomagane urządzenia przeznaczone do kończyn górnych dzielą się na protezy i ortezy. Proteza jest sztucznym zamiennikiem brakującej części ciała, natomiast orteza to urządzenie ortopedyczne wykorzystywane do wspierania i korygowania ruchów kończyn w celu poprawy ich funkcjonalności [2]. Ortezy dzielą się na dwa główne rodzaje:• urządzenia konstruowane z myślą o wspieraniu efektorów użytkownika, • urządzenia, których poszczególne ruchome złącza są dopasowane do kolejnych stawów kończyny [3].Pierwszy typ ortez obejmuje rozwiązania wolnostojące, których zasadą działania jest przyłożenie siły do narzą-du wykonawczego tak, aby wspierać lub utrudniać jego ruch [4]. Ortezy drugiego typu, nazywane wspomaganymi egzoszkieletami, są urządzeniami nakładanymi na ciało użytkownika. Abstract. For over a century, the development of exoskeletons experienced five periods including sprout, exploration, dormancy, accumulation and climax period from a concept in 19 th century to applications in distinctive fields in 21 th century. Recently, exoskeletons are applied in military, civilian and rehabilitation to augment the travel and loading abilities of soldiers, increase an operator's load-handling capabilities, reduce the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders, and improve the lost functions and quality of life of patients, respectively. Aiming at lessening the strain on physical therapists to train patients with severe or degenerative disabilities, motor cognitive limitation and improving their quality of life, exoskeletons are applied on the field of rehabilitation, mainly on patient training and locomotion. Although great progress has been made in the century long effort to design and implement exoskeletons, many design challenges still remain including powered devices, the comfort of human-machine interface and how to effectively understand the wearer's intensions.
