A Review of Embedding Hexagonal Cells in the Circular and Hexagonal Region of Interest

Abstract: Hexagonal cells are applied in various fields of research. They exhibit many advantages, and one of the most important is their possibility to be closely packed and to form a hexagonal grid that fully covers the Region of Interest (ROI) without overlaps or gaps. ROI can be of various geometrical shapes, but this paper deals with the circular or hexagonal ROI approximations. The main purpose of our research is to provide a short review on the literature concerning the hexagonal grid, summarizing the existing st… Show more

“…The geospatial data were processed using hexagonal tessellation. Due to its advantages over other approaches, this method is used in many fields of science (Prvan et al, 2019). This method was also used to model the distribution of species and create an ecological model by assigning specific values to each hexagon (Birch et al, 2007).…”

“…Hexagonal networks play an important role in many applications, and methods to calculate the number of edges and vertices were described earlier [ 22 ]. The equations to calculate the e / n ratio for the specific examples shown in Figure 2 are detailed in Appendix A .…”
