A review of current knowledge and future trends in polymer/boehmite nanocomposites

Abstract: Boehmite [bey-mahyt] is a unique aluminum oxide hydroxide nanostructure. It consists of nanosheets of octahedral aluminum ions with surface hydroxyl groups. Owing to exceptional reinforcing behavior, boehmite nanoparticles have gained immense attention as polymeric nanofillers. Essential matrices used with the boehmite based nanocomposites include poly(methyl methacrylate), polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, epoxy, and other polymers. In this review, all-inclusive considerations on the design, morphology,… Show more

“…29 Indeed, boehmite is one of the polymorph phases of aluminum oxide, also known as aluminum oxyhydroxide. [30][31][32][33][34] It has a cubic orthorhombic structure of aluminum oxide hydroxide and can be provided in water utilizing available materials. 35 In addition, boehmite has been used as a starting material for the synthesis of alumina and composite reinforcement material in ceramics, vaccine adjuvants, and cosmetics.…”

“…At the same time, the addition of inorganic rigid particles to iPP can toughen and modify PP; however, the disadvantage of this method is that rigid particles can easily undergo agglutination in the PP matrix and exhibit poor dispersion, which can only improve PP performance to a certain extent; hence, it is difficult to meet the production requirements 22 . In addition, studies found that the addition of hydroxy carbonate hydrotalcite (HT) with a sheet, block, or fiber block structure to iPP can improve the ductility of PP to a certain extent, but its toughening effect is not clear 23,24 . In addition, plastic can be added to iPP to improve the performance of PP.…”

“…22 Boehmite is actually one of the polymorphs phases of aluminum oxide which called aluminum oxyhydroxide (AlOOH). [23][24][25][26][27] BNPs with high surface area have high hydroxyl groups on their surface that causes it to be used as a coating. 28,29 Therefore, magnetic boehmite nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @boehmite NPs) have advantages of homogeneous catalyst (such as large surface area and activity), high stability (such as boehmite NPs) and MNPs (such as easily and magnetically separation using an external magnet).…”
