High‐quality modification of general polypropylene by the synergistic effect of zinc adipate, hydrotalcite, and polypropylene (SP179)

Abstract: Owing to its excellent mechanical properties and good fluidity, polypropylene (PP) exhibits widespread applications; however, its unsatisfactory impact resistance hinders its further application. In this study, as a β-nucleating agent, zinc adipate (ZnAA) was produced by the solution method. Next, the notch impact strength, melting index, and tensile strength of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) were adopted as indices, and ZnAA, hydrotalcite (HT), and PP (SP179) were added into iPP to modify it and render high pe… Show more

“…However, polypropylene has some obvious defects, such as low molecular chain flexibility, low impact strength, low heat distortion temperature, poor heat and oxygen aging resistance, no polar groups on the molecular chain, and high polarity. When molecular polymers or fillers are mixed, it is easy to form an interface, resulting in poor mechanical properties [2] . Nanocellulose is widely used in medicine and cosmetics because of its environmental protection and biodegradability.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Thus, regulating the microstructure during the molding process is vital to prepare the PP products to stand out in transparency, impact toughness, rigidity and heat resistance, satisfying the requirements in the applications like domestic appliances, packaging, medical supplies, electronics and automotive industries. 3,4,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Besides, PP with controllable crystallization properties is newly applied to alternative materials for potential applications, like redox active sites, organic ligands and bioorganic binders, etc. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] The crystalline microstructure formed is affected by both the external factors containing temperature and force fields, and the internal factors like molecular chain structure and molecular weight, and so forth.…”

“…1,[22][23][24] Generally, the α phase with a monoclinic structure is the most stable in thermodynamics and easiest to form in processing naturally, contributing to the higher stiffness, while the β phase with a hexagonal structure is not thermodynamically stable and obtained at certain conditions or specific nucleating agent (NA) which can improve the impact strength and heat distortion temperature. 6,22,24 Besides, the polymer crystallization process consists of the formation of primary nuclei and the growth of crystalline grains. 25 And for the homogeneous nucleation inducing crystallization at the relatively stable condition, the crystallization speed is slow corresponding to a long period, due to the long polymeric chains and hierarchical structures.…”
