A Review of Clinical Guidelines on the Management of Iron Deficiency and Iron-Deficiency Anemia in Women with Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Abstract: Introduction: Up to one-third of women of reproductive age experience heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB). HMB can give rise to iron deficiency (ID) and, in severe cases, iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). Aim: To review current guidelines for the management of HMB, with regards to screening for anemia, measuring iron levels, and treating ID/IDA with iron replacement therapy and noniron-based treatments. Methods: The literature was searched for English-language guidelines relating to HMB published between 2010 and 2020,… Show more

“…Heavy blood loss from menstruation is a potential contributor to iron deficiency anemia [ 8 ]. Defined as a blood loss of ~80 mL during one menstrual cycle [ 9 ], studies have shown that heavy menstrual bleeding affects ~18–38% of women of reproductive age [ 10 ]. However, the proportion of women thought to experience heavy menstrual bleeding is likely even higher due to underdiagnosis [ 10 ].…”

However, the proportion of women thought to experience heavy menstrual bleeding is likely even higher due to underdiagnosis [ 10 ]. Prolonged heavy menstrual blood may lead to decreased iron stores in women, especially if women are not consuming a sufficient amount of dietary iron [ 10 ].…”

“…The technique has been successfully applied to evaluate tumor characteristics non-invasively (4). While several studies showed the bene ts of radiomics in solid tissue and predominantly cancer research (5-7), its potential to assess owing structures and moving tissues has not yet been investigated.Acute and chronic blood loss might not only be surrogates of yet undiagnosed diseased which require further workup but also might be considered as an illness itself which requires haemostasis management (8,9).
