A Review of Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity Properties of Piper Species

Abstract: Antioxidants are compounds that are able to inhibit the negative effects that come from free radicals. The phenomenon of imbalanced antioxidant production and the accumulation of free radicals in cells and tissues can cause oxidative stress. Excessive free radicals that enter the body cannot be warded off by endogenous antioxidant compounds so that the required antioxidant compounds can come from the outside, which helps in the performance of endogenous antioxidants. Antioxidants that come from outside consist… Show more

“…In nature, it has been proven that the chemical compositions, particularly those of phenolic and oxygenated components, are directly responsible for the antioxidant action of plant extracts and EOs. [73,74] The current findings demonstrated that the S. glaucus EO is moderate scavener of the DPPH, ABTS and metal chelating that agreed with the previous reports. [33] This oil' scavenging potencies was directly correlated with its chemical components especially the oxygenated constituents.…”

“…In most studies, a health outcome is commonly linked with the level of bioactive compounds consumed daily. Such compounds—carotenoids, polyphenols, and sterols/stanols, among others, are known to counteract oxidative damage and downregulate pro‐inflammatory cytokines/adipokines in healthy conditions and in some illnesses (Carsono et al., 2022; Girardelo et al., 2020; Granato et al., 2022).…”

“…Flavonoids provide health benefits with their wide spectrum of effects and are essential being as constituents in a variety of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, medical, and cosmetic applications. This is due to their free radical scavenging properties being as strong anti-oxidants, along with their capacity to modulate basic cellular enzyme functions ( Karak, 2019 ; Carsono et al., 2022 ). As a result of in vivo and/or in vitro research conducted on flavonoids has shown that flavonoids have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, anti-allergic, anti-ulcer, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-protozoal, anti-platelets, anti-atherogenic activities ( Lesnik and Bren, 2021 ; Mumtaz et al., 2021 ; Demir et al., 2022 ; Puangpraphant et al., 2022 ; Vo et al., 2022 ).…”
