A retrospective study comparing histopathological and immunopathological features of nasal planum dermatitis in 20 dogs with discoid lupus erythematosus or leishmaniosis

Abstract: In this study, similar histopathological and immunopathological findings were observed in dogs with nasal planum lesions due to DLE or CanL. Therefore, in areas endemic for leishmaniosis, the presence of the parasite should be investigated in canine nasal planum dermatitis showing clinical and histopathological features suggestive of DLE.

“…Pigmentary incontinence occurs secondarily to the interface reaction (Fig. 11a,b ) but it is not specific to this type of injury and it can be found, persistent, in the nasal planum of dogs without concurrent nasal dermatitis [ 58 , 59 ] Thickening of the basement membrane zone is patchy or multifocal but is not specific, as it occurs with other chronic inflammatory disorders of the nasal planum, such as leishmaniosis, where geographically relevant [ 60 ]. Superficial dermal fibrosis can be absent or range from mild-to-marked.…”

“…The “interface dermatitis,” seen histopathologically in depigmenting nasal lesions of dogs with leishmaniosis, is indistinguishable from the reaction characterising discoid lupus erythematosus, suggesting similar immunopathology in the infectious and idiopathic immune‐mediated diseases (De Lucia et al . 2017).…”

“…Tissue infiltration by lymphoid cells, indicative of cell-mediated or cytotoxic immune reactions may also be part of the pathogenesis of some tissue pathology in CanL (Hosein et al 2017).
