“…Clinical studies show that a relatively high percentage of children (around 4%) of whose mothers were treated with buprenorphine during pregnancy, had problems with mental development at the age of 3 to 5 years of age, including behavioural and emotional issues [27,52]. Like with methadone, it is also not known in this case whether the observed adverse effects are not the result of the dependent women taking other psychoactive substances including street drugs, which were often cut with toxic fillers.…”

“…Like in the case of uncontrolled opioid taking, exposure to methadone may be associated with a newborn's worse state of health, smaller weight at birth and an increased indicator of perinatal mortality compared to the general population [25,26]. In the first years of life of children born to women who had been treated with methadone, there was an observed increase in the number of microcephaly incidents, visual abnormalities (including strabismus and nystagmus), increased blood pressure and acute or chronic otitis media [27]. It is however difficult to conclude that these incidents are only due to the effect of methadone as patients break abstinence and often take, in addition to methadone also other opioids, as well other psychoactive substances [28].…”

“…Still, information about the effect of opioids on the developing immune system is scarce. There are only few descriptive studies that have reported increased risk of hospitalization for infections among children born with NAS, and increased risk of infections among children prenatally exposed to methadone and buprenorphine when compared to the general population 26,27 .…”
