A retrospective clinical study of canine leishmaniasis in 150 dogs naturally infected by Leishmania infantum

Abstract: The clinical and laboratory findings observed in 150 dogs naturally infected by Leishmania infantum, from a large endemic area of southern Italy, are described. There was a gradual onset of clinical signs and the course of the disease was progressive in almost all the cases. The majority of the dogs were mongrels (43.3 per cent), male (64.7 per cent), of medium size (50.6 per cent), three to seven years old (64.7 per cent), and living outdoors (60 per cent). They showed generalised (56.7 per cent) or symmetric… Show more

“…In the present study, dermatological entities previously described by Ferrer (1988), Ciaramella et al (1997) and Lima et al (2004) were observed. Dry desquamation associated with alopecia usually starting on the head (mainly ears and eyes-orbital) and extending to the rest of the body was observed (Ferrer 1988;Ciaramella et al, 1997). In the L. infantum infection, Rallis et al (2005) also noted nasodigital hyperkeratosis and bacterial, superficial or deep pyoderma.…”

“…These animals play a central role in the transmission cycle to humans by phlebotomine sand flies. As also observed in the Old World (Ciaramella et al, 1997), symptomatic cases of CVL due to L. chagasi, in America, presents clinically with anemia, emaciation, splenomegaly, local or generalized lymphadenopathy, cutaneous lesions, ocular lesions (Brito et al, 2006) weight loss, and cachexia. In the present study, dermatological entities previously described by Ferrer (1988), Ciaramella et al (1997) and Lima et al (2004) were observed.…”

“…leishmaniasis [7] but it usually causes chronic renal failure in dogs in our working area (west of Spain), characterized by glomerulonephritis due to immune complex deposition [5], interstitial nephritis and occasionally amyloidosis [15,31]. The immune complexes cause a secondary inflammatory reaction [10] and the reduction in the perfusion of the peritubular capillaries leads to tubular and interstitial tissue ischemia [35].…”

“…In dogs, VL is associated with variable clinical manifestations characterized by splenomegaly, limphadenopathy, anemia, pancytopenia, weight loss and weakness (Ciaramella et al, 1997). The disease may also cause male (Diniz et al, 2005) and female genital lesions (Silva et al, 2008).…”
