A retrieval analysis of the Precice intramedullary limb lengthening system

Abstract: ObjectivesThe Precice nail is the latest intramedullary lengthening nail with excellent early outcomes. Implant complications have led to modification of the nail design. The aim of this study was to perform a retrieval study of Precice nails following lower-limb lengthening and to assess macroscopical and microscopical changes to the implants and evaluate differences following design modification, with the aim of identifying potential surgical, implant, and patient risk factors.MethodsA total of 15 nails were… Show more

“…An analysis of retrieved PRECICE nails documented improvements from the first version to the current version (Panagiotopoulou et al 2018). However, in line with our findings regarding STRYDE, these authors also noted biological material within PRECICE nails, while internal corrosion was confined to the early versions.…”

“…These findings are congruent with the visual assessment of the PRECICE nail found in a previous study. 33 This is the first study that is attempting to quantify the extent of wear sustained on the telescopic component of PRECICE nails and identify possible factors that contribute to an increase in wear. Aside from the difference in design, further implant factors such as implant diameter did not affect wear (p = 0.056).…”
