A Research Framework of Digital Leadership

Abstract: In leading architectural offices where digital technologies have become de facto part and parcel of the architectural design process, it has become pointless to talk about ``architectural design'' and ``digital technology'' as separate phenomena. In fact, those offices showcase advances in their designs through combined developments in process, tools, teams, materials, and research. Far from being a passive addition to conventional processes, digital technologies transform the whole spectrum of architectural e… Show more

“…Leadership is a crossdisciplinary concept. Leadership is a multi-disciplinary concept which refers to an important quality characteristic for organizations Zupancic et al (2016). Although digital leadership has been widely studied at organizational level, we argue that digital leadership is also needed by individuals to recognise changes and innovation in digital technology.…”

“…Kane et al (2015) draw attention to the roles that distinguish digital leaders from other leadership types and argue that there should be a clear digital strategy combined with leadership and culture ready to lead transformation. At this point, leaders trying to strengthen a digital culture; Their commitment to a new working approach and their tasks such as communicating entrepreneurial processes and ensuring progress by updating goals stand out ( Guinan et al, 2019 ) As a matter of fact, Zupancic et al’s (2017) studies show digital leadership competencies; human resources, architectural design process, digital ecologies, and collaboration environment. From this point, digital leadership is characterized by the use of an organization’s digital resources to achieve organizational goals and objectives ( Shah and Patki, 2020 ).…”

“…Their two axes of this grid are: innovation (vertical axis) and technology and people (horizontal axis), aiming to combine both approaches in order to align values of an innovative team-oriented organization. Zupancic et al, (2018) elaborated a research framework for digital leadership. This term 'evolves not from a pure software-programming point of view but from an active integration in the architectural design process, understanding social dynamics, operating in rich digital environments and responsive to sensitive spatial conditions' (p.2).…”

“…This term 'evolves not from a pure software-programming point of view but from an active integration in the architectural design process, understanding social dynamics, operating in rich digital environments and responsive to sensitive spatial conditions' (p.2). Four competence areas of digital leadership are (1) human resources and leadership (investigating leadership models based on facilitating skills of group integration); (2) architectural design process (creativity and design and research); (3) digital ecologies; and (4) collaborative environments (Zupancic et al, 2018). From this study researches can derive future research lines considering the four According Kane et al, (2019) he most important skills that leaders need to succeed in digital environments are: transformative vision (knowledge of market and trends, problem-solving abilities), forward-looking (clear vision and strategy), understanding of technology (prior experience and digital literacy), change-oriented mindset (open-minded, adaptable, innovative), strong leadership (pragmatic, focused, assertive), and other skills such as team-building skills and collaboration.…”
