“…This situation is to be expected in the majority of shallow environments with a developed littoral zone colonized by macrophytes (Fantin-Cruz et al, 2010;Sousa & Elmoor-Loureiro, 2012). Rotifer species registered in this study belonged to Lecanidae, family inhabiting shallow and littoral areas and often associated with plants ( Padovesi-Fonseca et al, 2011;Siddiqi & Karuthapandi, 2013). There was a relative predominance of young forms of Copepoda and this pattern has been the most common, as observed by López & Sampaio (2000) and Silveira et al (2010) in shallow systems.…”

“…In addition, seven new species described from India are already synonymized by Segers ; these include L. donnerianus Dhanapathi (= L. ungulata ), L. neali Wulfert (= L. crepida ), L. paradecipiens Nayar (= L. thalera ), L. curvilinealis Arora (= L. curvicornis ), L. longidactyla Arora (= L. curvicornis ), L. tesselata (= L. nitida ), and L. yamunensis Novotná‐Dvorakova (= L. papuana ). The unwarranted listing of majority of these as valid species and inclusion of misidentifications is continued by Dhanapathi ; this work followed unabated by Siddiqi and Karuthapandi aggravates more incorrect and dubious reports.…”

“…The situation is complicated by poor descriptions of new species and the lack of deposition of type specimens. Even a compilation of rotifers by Dhanapathi relying on misidentifications and poor illustrations of the taxon adds to taxonomic anomalies, while a more recent note by Siddiqi and Karuthapandi includes dubious reports and incorrect identifications due to poor expertise. In light of these concerns, we review the taxonomic status of the Indian Lecanidae and present an annotated checklist of valid species.…”

“…A compilation of rotifers by Dhanapathi (2000) relying on misidentifications and poor illustrations of the taxon added to such anomalies. This trend has continued unabated in a report on Lecanidae from Andhra Pradesh by Siddiqi & Karuthapandi (2013 (Segers 1995) with L. ungulata. The unwarranted listing of these taxa as valid species has been continued by Siddiqi & Karuthapandi (2013).…”
