A repeated cross‐sectional analysis of breastfeeding initiation rates in Ireland for two decades and 10 recommended priorities for improvement

Abstract: Despite a number of public health and policy-based initiatives, Ireland's national breastfeeding rates are among the lowest globally. Regionally, the Mid-West of Ireland has historically had low breastfeeding initiation rates, and parts of its major urban area such as Limerick City suffer the highest levels of economic deprivation in the country. In that context, this repeated cross-sectional study analysed breastfeeding initiation trends in the Mid-West of Ireland for two decades, from 2001 to 2020 inclusivel… Show more

“…In addition, the implementation of IMD is also often carried out imperfectly, such as performing IMD after the baby is wrapped first so that there is no skin contact with the mother, even officers often help breastfeed the baby to the mother, because the baby cannot find the mother's nipple (Nur et al, 2019). Implementation of IMD correctly and according to IMD procedures, by not missing the process of skin contact between the baby and the mother, has been shown to help bonding and the subsequent breastfeeding process (Philip et al, 2023). The type of delivery can also determine whether or not IMD is performed.…”

“…Trends in breastfeeding rates in routinely collected data from other parts of the UK also suggest that the pandemic was not associated with a marked change in breastfeeding prevalence in Wales [ 18 ] (breastfeeding initiation and at 10 days, 6 weeks, 6 months), Scotland [ 19 ] (any breastfeeding and EBF at 6–8 weeks) or Northern Ireland [ 20 ] (breastfeeding initiation and at hospital discharge). In repeated cross-sectional surveys in the Mid-West of Ireland in 2001–2020, an area with traditionally low breastfeeding rates, there was also no change in breastfeeding initiation or at hospital discharge in 2020 compared with the previous years [ 21 ]. Data on admissions to UK neonatal units showed a decrease in breastfeeding at hospital discharge in moderate-to-late preterm infants, but an increase in full-term infants in April-June 2020 compared with December 2019 to February 2020 [ 22 ].…”

“… Philip et al . (2023) report the established culture of combined feeding or combination feeding, offering breastmilk/breastfeeding and CMF, in Ireland, which is detrimental to the continuation of breastfeeding.…”
