A remarkable new genus and species of Nemourinae (Plecoptera, Nemouridae) from Sichuan, China, with systematic notes on the related genera

Abstract: A remarkable new genus and species of Nemourinae, Sinonemura balangshana gen. et sp. n., is described from Balang Mountains, Sichuan, southwestern China. The description is based on morphology and molecular data. The Nemourinae genera related to the new taxon are re-evaluated on the basis of comparative functional morphology of male epiproct. Notes on the Asian distribution of the Nemourinae are also given. et al. (2020) A remarkable new genus and species of Nemourinae (Plecoptera, Nemouridae) from Sichuan, Ch… Show more

“…Morphological terminology follows our previous Nemouridae papers (Murányi, 2007;Mo et al, 2020). E hook; epiproct with short and strong ring, apically widened lateral arms, large and plate-like apical sclerite that is rectangular in caudal view.…”

“…In the genus level revision of the Nemouridae, Baumann (1975) distinguished two species complexes within Nemoura but not treated the marginata group as a taxonomical or operational unit. Recently, Mo et al (2020) pointed out, that the limits of Nemoura sensu stricto is hard to define morphologically, the paraphyletic Nemoura sensu lato requires erection of further genera, and that species groups within Nemoura are generally hard to define because of intermediate morphology of several species. However, Nemoura presently includes nearly 200 valid species (DeWalt et al, 2023), and species grouping is necessary for operational reasons, even if some of the groups will prove to be not true evolutionary lineages by future molecular studies.…”

“…After revising most of the genera of Nemouridae, Baumann (1975) divided this family into 2 subfamilies (Nemourinae and Amphinemurinae) and 17 genera. Recently, 4 more genera ( Sphaeronemoura , Tominemoura , Nanonemoura , and Sinonemura ) have been added, bringing the total number of genera in this family to 21 ( Baumann and Fiala 2001 , Shimizu and Sivec 2001 , Sivec and Stark 2009 , Mo et al 2020 ). Although Baumann (1975) proposed a widely accepted classification system for the family Nemouridae based on morphological data, the monophyly of 2 subfamilies has not been well supported by molecular evidence, and conflicting results have been produced ( Terry and Whiting 2003 , Gamboa et al 2019 , South et al 2021 ).…”
