This study aimed to correlate, compare and identify the family, personal and demographic variables that may predict behavioral problems in adolescents. A total of 300 adolescents participated, 230 with behavioral problems (177 girls and 53 boys; M= 14.00 years; SD=1.24) and 70 without (47 girls and 23 boys; M=14.09 years; SD=1.33). Data was collected through questionnaires and inventories completed by adolescents and analyzed using Pearson’s correlation, Student’s t-tests and multiple binary logistic regression. Results showed low self-control as a risk factor and social skills and low frequency of physical abuse and maternal neglect as protection factors. The model evaluated had a reasonable predictive power (79.9%, specificity 93.9% and sensitivity 34.3%). The findings contribute to the prevention of behavioral problems in adolescents.

BackgroundAs many preschoolers are not able to cooperate with health-related invasive procedures, sedation can help with the child’s comfort and allow the intervention to be done. It is scarcely known how parents affect children’s behavior during dental treatment under conscious sedation. The aim of this exploratory study was to analyze the association between mother-child interactions in day-to-day family life and preschool children’s behavior during dental treatment under conscious sedation.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 27 children aged 2–6 years and their mothers. The children’s behavior during dental treatment under conscious sedation was verified through the analysis of videos and using an observational scale. Social skills of mothers were verified through interviews using the Parental Educative Social Skills Interview Script (RE-HSE-P); the sum of the scores allowed the establishment of the categories “clinical” and “non-clinical”. We presented descriptive analyses and bivariate associations.ResultsChildren’s overall behavior during dental sedation was: very poor (n = 2), poor (n = 1), regular (n = 2), good (n = 9), very good (n = 9) and excellent (n = 4). Social skills varied: parental educational social skills (n = 24 clinical vs. n = 3 non-clinical); child social skills (n = 20 vs. n = 7), context variables (n = 15 vs. n = 12), negative educational practices (n = 12 vs. n = 15), child behavior problems (n = 7 vs. n = 20). There was no association between child behavior under sedation and social skills categories (P > 0.05).ConclusionsThe majority of interviewed mothers reported issues in parental educational social skills and child social skills, which did not affect the outcomes of the children’s behavior during the procedural conscious sedation.

ResumoAs práticas educativas parentais são as formas utilizadas pelos pais para contingenciar o comportamento dos filhos. Dessa perspectiva, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a correlação entre estilos parentais e desempenho acadêmico; assim, as notas escolares das crianças nas disciplinas de matemática e português foram registradas. Participaram deste estudo 203 crianças com idade entre oito e onze anos, de ambos os sexos, que cursavam entre 3° e 5° ano de duas escolas municipais localizadas no interior do Paraná. Os participantes responderam ao Inventário de Estilos Parentais. Foram encontradas correlações entre as práticas educativas e o rendimento acadêmico, em especial com as práticas maternas. Foram observadas diferenças significativas nas médias das práticas educativas e estilos parentais referenciadas por estudantes com alto e baixo rendimento escolar. As práticas educativas maternas e paternas foram consideradas preditoras do rendimento acadêmico. Discute-se a importância das práticas parentais, em especial as maternas, no desenvolvimento acadêmico de crianças. Relationship between parental practices and academic performance in children AbstractThe parenting practices are the forms used by parents to impound their children's behavior. From this perspective, the goal of this study was to analyze how parenting styles and children's academic achievement relate to one other; thus, all children's school grades in the subjects of Mathematics and Portuguese were recorded. Study participants were 203 children aged between eight and eleven years old, of both sexes, who were enrolled between third and fifth year from two public schools in the interior of Paraná, Brazil.
