A Regenerative Business Model with Flexible, Modular and Scalable Processes in A Post-Covid Era: The Case of The Spinning Mesh Disc Reactor (SMDR)

Abstract: With stringent environmental regulations and a new drive for sustainable manufacturing, there is an unprecedented opportunity to incorporate novel manufacturing techniques. Recent political and pandemic events have shown the vulnerability to supply chains, highlighting the need for localised manufacturing capabilities to better respond flexibly to national demand. In this paper, we have used the spinning mesh disc reactor (SMDR) as a case study to demonstrate the path forward for manufacturing in the post-Covi… Show more

“…This insight suggests that regenerativeness is a core issue in SBM research, which is in line with SBM literature beyond the scope of this study. For example, Emanuelsson et al (2021), Franco (2019) and Goni et al (2021) address regenerativeness in SBM research but were not part of our sample 2 . Our study contributes to this research and advances scholarly knowledge by revealing five concrete concepts that mirror the principle ‘create to regenerate’.…”

“…Likewise, another case study by [29] focuses on a chemical manufacturing innovation (SMDR) as a potential platform to speed up business model transformation within the chemical sector. While the authors mention aspects such as enabling local, flexible, and resilient manufacturing (p. 2), regenerative approaches to fine-chemical production, regenerative supply chains, and a regenerative system that minimizes the loss of biological and technical nutrients (p. 8), they do not define or explain these attributes or the mechanisms by which they can be achieved.…”
