A regeneration indicator for Forest Inventory and Analysis: history, sampling, estimation, analytics, and potential use in the midwest and northeast United States

Abstract: The density and composition of regeneration drives future forest character for forests in need of replacement. Forested ecosystems face numerous regeneration stressors including invasive plants, insects and diseases, herbivory, lack of management, and climate change. As stands that make up these systems age, it is imperative to track the viability of forest reproduction. The information required for understanding the complexity of forest dynamics during the stand establishment stage has been lacking in our Nat… Show more

“…To fill the need for more detailed information on regeneration, the Northern Research Station's FIA program (NRS-FIA) added protocols to collect regeneration data on a subset of sample plots (Phase 2-plus plots) during the growing season (McWilliams et al 2015). The results in this report are based on measurements of 184 plots measured from 2012 to 2014.…”

“…The tree seedling sample is designed to inventory and monitor the forest's regenerative capacity (McWilliams et al 2015). Tree seedling counts are used along with the sapling tally to estimate advance tree seedling regeneration (ATSR).…”

“…To address the need for more detailed information on regeneration, the FIA program added regeneration measurement protocols for collecting data on a subset of NRS-FIA sample plots (McWilliams et al 2015). The results presented here for Delaware reflect only two of the seven panels of measurements that will eventually make up the first full baseline dataset for the regeneration indicator and include only seven sample plots visited in 2012 and 2013.…”
