Oaxaca es el estado de México con mayor diversidad biológica y cultural. Los pueblos originarios de Oaxaca son todos descendientes, total o parcialmente, de la antigua cultura madre Olmeca también conocida como “Pueblo del Jaguar”. Estos pueblos originarios actualmente están tratando de defender sus territorios y bienes naturales comunes de la explotación por parte de los gobiernos y las grandes empresas multinacionales. Oaxaca es el quinto estado más grande de México y comprende 12 regiones fisiográficas y 16 grupos etnolingüísticos originarios. La alta diversidad cultural que se observa en Oaxaca está interrelacionada con la considerable diversidad biológica y ambiental y debe entenderse que la protección de una depende de la protección de la otra. El conocimiento de la biodiversidad de Oaxaca continúa aumentando, especialmente entre los vertebrados tetrápodos. La diversidad cultural en Oaxaca, especialmente con respecto a los idiomas, es la más diversa en todo México. En varias comunidades, ejidos y con pequeños propietarios existe un sistema de Áreas Comunitarias de Conservación, que permiten la protección de diversas especies no incluidas dentro de las ANPs federales, así como cuerpos de agua y los bosques dentro del estado. Estas ACC son parte de un movimiento de resistencia contra la participación en el sistema formal de ANP por decreto. Los pueblos indígenas de Oaxaca son parte de una comunidad global de personas que se sabe que son responsables de la protección de alrededor del 80% de la biodiversidad remanente del mundo. Los propios esfuerzos del gobierno mexicano por la conservación se remontan a la administración del presidente Lázaro Cárdenas de Río. Los intentos de manejo forestal comunitario de los pueblos indígenas de todo el mundo han sido apoyados o no por los gobiernos federales. Los pueblos indígenas de la Sierra Madre de Oaxaca están utilizando el ecoturismo de bajo impacto como un medio adicional para conservar sus tierras y para apoyar estilos de vida sostenibles, al tiempo que se resisten a los esfuerzos de explotación de los grupos no indígenas de la sociedad. El Corredor Interoceánico constituye la amenaza más significativa para los esfuerzos de estos grupos indígenas, así como otras actividades comerciales a gran escala realizadas por grandes consorcios industriales suscritos por sus aliados políticos en el gobierno federal, cuestionando por qué las ANPs que existen realmente a qué personas se suponen un beneficio. A la luz de esta realidad, hemos realizado una serie de recomendaciones para el alivio de estos problemas a los pueblos originarios que permitan continuar con sus esfuerzos de preservación de la biodiversidad nativa y su propia diversidad cultural.

Background. Riparian environments offer microhabitats that can serve as development sites and pathways for various reptile species, however, these species are threatened by habitat loss, illegal trafficking, use and persecution by the man, among others. Objective. To analyze the diversity and conservation status of the reptile community associated with two riparian ecosystems in the state of Tabasco. Methodology. The study was carried out on the banks of the stream of the Villa de Guadalupe ejido located within the Agua Selva Ecotourism complex in the municipality of Huimanguillo, Tabasco, Mexico. For the registration of individuals, ten band transects were established on the margins of the stream 100 m long by 10 m wide, separated by 25 m between them, five transects located in primary vegetation (VP) and five in secondary vegetation (VS), which were sampled monthly during a year with the method of visual encounters (VES), conducting day and night tours. Results. A total of 391 individuals of 25 species were recorded, of which 13 were lizards and 12 were snakes. The species Tantilla rubra, Geophis carinosus and Lepidophyma tuxtlae are new records for the state of Tabasco. The diversity index (1D) showed that the lizards were more diverse in VP than in VS (5.16 and 3.59), contrasting with snakes that were more diverse in VS than in VP (6.15 and 4.41). In addition, it was determined that 36% of reptiles are within some category of protection according to NOM-05SEMARNAT-2010 and 92% in categories of the IUCN and EVS. Implications. The results of this research highlight the importance of riparian ecosystems in the protection and maintenance of reptiles, in the same way it is suggested to use the EVS as a complementary method to evaluate the conservation status of species and enrich the information provided by NOM 059-SEMARNAT-2010 and the IUCN.

We provide an updated checklist of amphibians and reptiles from Isla María Cleofas, Mexico. This island is located at the Islas Marías Archipelago Biosphere Reserve on the coast of the state of Nayarit. The herpetofaunal diversity of Isla María Cleofas has been addressed for over a century; however, the literature is limited just a few scientific explorations and occasional records. In addition, previous herpetofaunal lists contain taxonomic inaccuracies, which are revised here, and recent nomenclatural changes are incorporated. Records of three newly reported species, Lampropeltis polyzona Cope, 1860, Leptophis diplotropis (Günther, 1872) and Tantilla calamarina Cope, 1866, were obtained during our fieldwork. Based on both our field observations and a literature review, the herpetofauna of Isla María Cleofas includes 16 species (two amphibians and 14 reptiles). We also review the conservation status of all species using three independent systems [NOM 059-SEMARNAT-2010, IUCN, and environmental vulnerability score (EVS)]. Finally, we discuss the likely occurrence of evolutionary independent lineages on the island.
