A Redox‐Induced Spin‐State Cascade in a Mixed‐Valent Fe33‐O) Triangle

Abstract: One-electron reduction of a pyrazolate-bridged triangular Fe (μ -O) core induces a cascade wherein all three metal centers switch from high-spin Fe to low-spin Fe . This hypothesis is supported by spectroscopic data ( H-NMR, UV-vis-NIR, infra-red, Fe-Mössbauer, EPR), X-ray crystallographic characterization of the cluster in both oxidation states and also density functional theory. The reduction induces substantial contraction in all bond lengths around the metal centers, along with diagnostic shifts in the spe… Show more

“…57 Fe-Mössbauer Mössbauer spectra were collected from powdered samples of 20 and reduced product at 80 K. Representative spectra are shown inFigure 62. Spectrum is similar to other [Fe 3 (μ 3 -O)(4-NO 2 -pz) 6 L 3 ] 2-(L = Cl -, Br -, SCN -, py, 4-Me-py) complexes, characterized by quadrupole doublets [33][34][35]. The spectra for 20 is highly characteristic of high-spin ferric ions, with an isomer shift, δ = 0.45 mms -1 and quadrupole splitting ΔE Q = 1.05 mms -1 .…”

“…While Fe(II) complexes feature prominently in spin-crossover applications, 8 examples where spin-crossover can be triggered by redox events are still uncommon. 9 Single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction were grown by vapor diffusion of diethylether into concentrated acetonitrile solutions. The SXRD structure obtained from crystals grown in this way shows a pseudo-octahedral geometry, with an acetonitrile adduct in the previously open coordination site trans to the pyrrole N to give the solvento adduct 2-MeCN (Figure 1).…”
