A Recent Review on Chemiluminescence Reaction, Principle and Application on Pharmaceutical Analysis

Abstract: This paper provides a general review on principle of chemiluminescent reactions and their recent applications in drug analysis. The structural requirements for chemiluminescent reactions and the different factors that affect the efficiency of analysis are included in the review. Chemiluminescence application in immunoassay is the new version for this review. Practical considerations are not included in the review since the main interest is to state, through the aforementioned applications, that chemiluminescen… Show more

“…Chemiluminescence (CL) is the phenomenon when vibronically excited product of an exoergic reaction relaxes back to its ground state with emission of photons [1,2 ]. This analytical method has received considerable attention from many researches over recent decades as a result of its scientific and technological importance to clinical tests and trace detection because of its high sensitivity, wide linear detection range, simple equipment, availability, wide range of applications and inexpensive cost [1][2][3][4].…”

“…This analytical method has received considerable attention from many researches over recent decades as a result of its scientific and technological importance to clinical tests and trace detection because of its high sensitivity, wide linear detection range, simple equipment, availability, wide range of applications and inexpensive cost [1][2][3][4]. Luminol is one of the earliest and most common CL reagents used in CL reaction.…”

“…Another very new approach, is to transform other forms of energy into electromagnetic energy to trigger the drug delivery system. For example, sonoluminescence (the emission of short bursts of light from ultrasound-stimulated bubbles) [105], chemiluminescence (emission of light as result of chemical reactions) [106], or bioluminescence (emission of light from living organisms) [107] are all processes by which electromagnetic energy can be produced from a non-light stimulus. Achilefu and coworkers have created systems that are stimulated by the transformation of radiation energy into electromagnetic energy.…”

“…[3 -5] Catalysts and co-factors can reduce the activation energy of this reaction. [2,[6][7][8][9] In special cases, the irradiation of a fluorescent dye may trigger the light emission from a CL-reagent such as luminol (photo-induced CL). [10] Also, the transfer of energy from an excited species to a fluorophore that in turn gets excited and relaxes to its ground state by emitting a photon may occur (sensitized or indirect CL).…”
