A realist approach to science and practice in psychology

Abstract: The possibility of uniting science and practice in psychology is considered. The main aim is to explore the ability of a realist approach to address the various dichotomies prevalent in psychology. “…Lektorskii (2010) describes three levels of reality in constructive realism including: ( Constructive realism assumes that observers can get "near to the truth" in measurement through direct and indirect observations (Cupchik, 2001). A person's outward, observable behaviours reflect their unobservable, constructed reality (i.e., psychological constructs) (Michie, Johnston, Francis, Hardeman, & Eccles, 2008;Maree, 2014;Streiner, Norman, & Cairney, 2015;Walsh et al, 2014). Like positivism, constructive realism supports data collection through measurement, and allocates numerical values to objective properties or constructs using a reductionist approach.…”

“…The literature review section of manuscripts is essential in providing a summary of primary research in the relevant subject matter and is a means for keeping abreast of organisational phenomena and problems that need further research (critical inquiry) in a particular context. The research method (either quantitative, qualitative, blended or multiple) is a process that assists positivistic-realistic critical inquiry; the appropriateness of a specific method is empirically determined via sensitivity to the subject matter under investigation (Maree, 2015;Petocz, 2011). As an applied science, I/O psychology research should inform practice, that is, bring new impetus to our understanding of the complexities embedded in psychosocial behaviour and problematic organisational phenomena in the contemporary and emerging future workplace.…”
