Particle size measurements of chromium hydrous oxide sols using electron microscopy and light scattering techniques were in excellent agreement.Comparison was based on the most probable diameter and width of the distribution. The normal, lognormal, and zero-order logarithmic density functions provided good first-order approximations to the particle size measurements. The chromium hydrous sols were less than 0.5 pm in size.A closed wet cell specimen holder in an electron microscope was developed to observe, in situ, the chromium hydrous oxide sols. The colloidal particles had a uniform spherical shape with a narrow size distribution. Observation of the particle formation process in the closed wet cell qualitatively supports the mechanism that basic polymeric sulfates act as embryos in the formation of these particles.

Size measurements of PSL (polystyrene latex) particles in a s u e range from 0.109 to 0.330 pm were made by laser aerosol spectrometer (PMS, LAS-X). The results were compared with those by electron microscopy. For example, the geometric standard deviation, o, , of nominally 0.176-pm PSL particles was measured as 1.05, assuming that their sues distribute log-normally. The value of 1.05 was very close to 1.02 measured by electron microscopy. It was found that the spectrometer had very high size resolution, although the size resolution of the light scattering type spectrometer has been said to be poor. For some samples of PSL particles, however, there were large differences between particle sizes measured by LAS-X and those by electron microscopy. It was also found that LAS-X had a problem in calibration of size response curve.
