Size Determination of Latex Particles by Electron Microscopy

Abstract: The diameters of Dow latex particles in the size range diameters determined by the manufacturer of the latex from 0.085 to 0.330 pm were determined by electron particles. Differences lay in the range from + 6 to -18%. microscopy. The effects of electron irradiation and theStandard deviations of the size distributions were also vacuum conditions in the microscope on the measured found to be different from the nominal values. particle diameter were investigated. A comparison among Therefore, for accurate experim… Show more

“…Aqueous suspensions of PSL's are often used to validate an A-CRDS system because they have certified tolerances obtained by direct comparison to National Institute of Standards and Technology Standard Reference Materials (Yamada et al 1985). The monodisperse distribution (geometric standard deviation, σ g , ∼1.01) of aerosolized PSL's is attractive as it can be narrower than the output of a DMA.…”

“…Their nominal sizes are 0.109, 0.176, 0.210, 0.312, and 0.330 pm in diameter. The size properties of these samples had already been examined by electron microscopy and had been shown in our previous study (Yamada et al, 1985). Test particles were prepared by nebulizing dilute aqueous suspensions of PSL particles.…”

“…Differences in standard deviations were also found (Yamada et al, 1985). Secondly, we measured sizes of these PSL particles with a laser particle counter.…”

“…Latex particles were chosen because they can be manufactured with extremely uniform sizes [19]. In addition, their shape can be uniquely described by their diameter which can be measured accurately using either SEM [20] or light scattering [21, 221. Experiments were performed to determine particle removal as a function of particle size and concentration, filter media thickness, filtration velocity, filter loading and feed particle size distribution. A model was developed to predict filter performance as a function of these variables.…”
