A re-appraisal of the systematic status of selected genera in Palaemoninae (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palaemonidae)

Abstract: Recent phylogenetic work (Ashelby et al., 2012) has demonstrated the need for a fresh appraisal of the systematic status of some Palaemoninae genera. In the present contribution the accumulated morphological as well as molecular evidence is reviewed. The genera Palaemonetes, Exopalaemon and Coutierella are demonstrated to be junior synonyms of Palaemon, which now contains 83 species. As a result of this systematic re-arrangement, two replacement names are needed. Palaemon kwantung nom. nov. now replaces Exopal… Show more

“…The genus Palaemon Weber, 1795 comprises 84 marine, estuarine and freshwater species in tropical and subtropical regions, including Palaemonetes Heller, 1869, which was recently considered to be a junior synonym of Palaemon by De Grave and Ashelby (2013), and the new species described here. Four strictly freshwater species occur in South America, distributed in the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraguay/lower Paraná River basins: Palaemon carteri (Gordon, 1935), Palaemon ivonicus (Holthuis, 1950) Palaemon mercedae (Pereira, 1986) and a new species described herein.…”

“…Thus, De Grave and Ashelby (2013) proposed the replacement name now in use. All members of the genus Palaemonetes were transferred to Palaemon by these authors based on morphological, cladistic and genetic evidence (Pereira 1997, Ashelby et al 2012, De Grave and Ashelby 2013, concluding that the presence/absence of mandibular palp can no longer be used as the sole character that separates both genera. Furthermore, larval development studies comparing 3 coastal Palaemonetes species with 3 species of Palaemon concluded that the differences within the genera are more pronounced that between genera, which suggests a close evolutionary relationship (Knowlton and Vargo 2004).…”

“…1) We performed prior identification of the material based on diagnostic morphological characteristics of the species (Holthuis, 1952;Melo, 2003). Morphological analyses for clade differentiation within M. jelskii were performed based on diagnostic characters traditionally used for the family (Holthuis, 1952;Pereira, 1997;De Grave and Ashelby, 2013;Carvalho et al, 2014).
