Distribution and genetic differentiation of Macrobrachium jelskii (Miers, 1877) (Natantia: Palaemonidae) in Brazil reveal evidence of non-natural introduction and cryptic allopatric speciation

Abstract: A B S T R A C TMacrobrachium jelskii (Miers, 1877) occurs in all major Brazilian drainage basins. Considering its wide distribution and the supposed isolation of certain populations, we evaluated phylogenetic relationships among populations from several river basins. Analyses of molecular data using the mitochondrial COI and 16S genes suggest the division of the species into two clades, "Amazonian" and "coastal." The genetic divergence between these two groups is greater than the genetic divergence within the … Show more

“…Macrobrachium jelskii is popularly known in Brazil as "camarão-sossego" (Paiva & Barreto, 1960) and it is among the 19 species of Macrobrachium Spence Bate, 1868 occurring in the Brazilian territory (De Grave & Fransen, 2011;Maciel et al, 2011;Pileggi & Mantelatto, 2012;De Grave & Ashelby, 2013;Santos et al, 2013;Vera-Silva et al, 2016). The type-locality of M. jelskii is Saint-Georges, in French Guiana, but it is widely distributed throughout South America (Pileggi et al, 2013).…”

“…In some regions of Brazil, M. jelskii is economically relevant in the aquarium trade and used as artisanal fishing bait and food by riverine populations (Cirilo et al, 2011;Vera-Silva et al, 2016). Ramírez et al (2010) and Urbano et al (2010), respectively, analyzed the biochemical composition and growth of the species under culture conditions, aiming to use it as a component of feed for fish and crustacean farming.…”

“…Historical biogeography indicates that Macrobrachium species composition results not only from local divergences [53], but also includes long-distance dispersal of different phylogenetic lineages [54]. From a biogeographic context, Macrobrachium possesses contrasting patterns of chromosome numbers, with the American species showing comparatively lower 2n numbers (94-98) and the major Asian species with 2n = 100-118 (Table 1; Figure 3).…”
